Dwarven
naming ceremonies are led by a clan priest and
require the presence of an altar. The ceremony
is held no sooner than a month after birth to
allow both mother and child to recover. It is
popular among the Dar'Kolbur dwarves to name their
offspring on mountaintops in the wake of dawn,
but for most the local clan temple will suffice.
Above all it is important to uphold tradition
and both clan and friends attend to witness the
naming ceremony and join the celebrations that
follow.
It is common sense among dwarves to select a name
that can sustain the echoes of tunnels and mountain
ranges. A dwarven poem tells of a child named
Norvindle who was lost forever in the labyrinths
of Frimblir because the shouts of his rescuers
could not reach him.
Dwarven surnames are derived from their clan,
and if they join a new clan they change it appropriately.
The name of a clan is inspired by commonly shared
occupations and traits.
Male forenames are composed of two syllables.
However female names are composed of three syllables
and often end with a vowel.
