Names
are a fashion among the Kvyr elves and popular names
come and go from year to year. However, names derived
from their mother colonies across the ocean remain
timeless. The A'lure elves are more stringent in
their selection of names, which are often inspired
by those that sacrificed their lives during their
historical journey from Kvyr. While the Kvyr elves
address the coastal gods in their naming ceremonies,
the A'lure elves turn to the forces of nature. Common
for all elves are that they gladly seek the advice
of bards for suitable names.
Elves that marry combine their surnames to form
a new one as a symbol of their joining. Children
bear the surname of just one of their parents, usually
from the side of the family most influential in
their upbringing. Although this is almost always
the mother's name initially, they may switch between
their parents' surnames more than once throughout
their childhood. Highborn Kvyr elves add the prefix
"aen" to their surnames, to indicate their lineage.
Ordinary citizens use "lei" in addition to their
surnames, while those of low or questionable birth
are addressed with the prefix "lon." The A'lure
elves have abandoned this caste-like system, but
their nobles still prefer to emphasize their surnames.
Thus they can be identified by their prefix "ano."
Elven names contain double vowels like ae, ei, ue
and io.
