Gnomes
are named in a short ceremony conducted by the parents
without the aid of priests. Guests bring gifts to
the ceremony that symbolize traits they hope the
child will grow up to have. All gifts are placed
in a chest and are presented to the child when she
has reached adulthood.
Legendary gnomes who have made breakthroughs in
fields such as mathematics, religion, astrology
or illusion often inspire names. The gnomish fondness
for tracing family bloodlines in clan records continually
inspires new candidates.
Gnomes usually have several names, sometimes as
many as four, but these are only used at formal
occasions. Surnames are derived from one's clan,
thus if a gnome changes clan, their surname changes
as well.
Gnome names contain triple consonants. Their surnames
resemble their forenames in style, but are generally
much longer.
Examples of forenames
Male names: Korbfiln, Bribbfe, Svilvrer, Kildri
Female names: Iserbfi, Evimblol, Areppli, Arelvril
Examples of surnames
Bofvribobble, Kittriginirfli, Arobbfirni, Ipelfrirfird
