Gnomes
often find other races to be irrational and short
sighted, basing too many decisions on emotions.
Other races are judged by their knowledge base and
their capacity to kindle it. People that show ignorance,
by the manner in which they store and maintain ancient
wisdom, are met with scorn. Gnomes believe that
knowledge is best preserved in written form, and
less worldly-wise gnomes base their assumptions
of other races on what they read.
Frimblir gnomes have a close relationship to their
distant cousins, the Borwin dwarves. A number of
dwarven clans earn their living in Frimblir as warriors
and craftsmen. Their services are appreciated as
a complement to gnome society, but they have remained
reserved towards gnome customs. The gnomes appreciate
their conservation of clan know-how and tradition.
On the downside they are seen as overprotective
of their skills, and lacking in pursuit of innovation.
The gnomes at large share the dwarven scorn for
tribal orcs and humans. The orc theft of dwarven
crafts and skills during the Dar'Kolbur wars is
deemed revolting and unforgivable. The Hirmfel gnomes
of the Whispering Plains are given weekly opportunities
to study the aggressive traits of the tribes at
first hand. They have successfully managed to keep
their foes at bay, but their caution has also led
them to regard all strangers with suspicion.
The gnomes have had sparse but unpleasant contact
with trolls. The trolls are said to have a weak
written tradition, seldom entrusted to any lasting
materials. Their oral storytelling tradition is
on the other hand perceived as interesting, if only
one could understand their grunts.
Arwondel gnomes usually comply with local customs
in publicly shared spaces, but they uphold strong
gnomish traditions in their homes. The cities they
live in provide interesting opportunities to study
the languages and writings of other races. Many
assumptions regarding the other races are confirmed,
but others have been forced to yield in the light
of new insights.
Relations between Frimblir and Arwondel gnomes are
hearty, and a traveling gnome can often find shelter
among local kin. The Hirmfel gnomes are admired
for their advances in military inventions. They
are said to be toughened, resolved and at times
headstrong. The Hirmfel gnomes on the other hand
see their cousins as a bit too domesticated, but
they acknowledge their keen scholarly knowledge.
