An
orc gains her name shortly after birth when the
mother presents the newborn to the clan. The spectators
join in with the infant's wailing, developing it
into an improvised song. Loud infants are expected
to do well in life, so the mother often encourages
the wailing with surreptitious pinches. In the aftermath
of the song the clan bard proclaims the newborn's
name. The name is viewed as the result of a joint
effort brought forth by the song.
An orc will be given nicknames from her peers as
she matures. These names will describe attributes,
characteristics or deeds, and it is up to the orc
to deserve a prestigious one – or challenge a degrading
one. One of the nicknames will eventually stick
and become the orc's surname. It is possible for
an orc to gain a new nickname that overshadows her
old one. This usually occurs when a great feat has
been done.
Male orc names often end with heavy double consonants,
whereas female names typically begin and end with
a vowel.
